These Are The Most Common Mistakes People Make With Replacement Window Handle

Choosing uPVC Replacement Window Handles

Window handles are a fundamental part of your uPVC windows and should match to the existing frame. The size of the spindle determines if your new uPVC handles will fit.

Use the table below as a quick guide to measure the length of the spindle of your uPVC handle. This will ensure that you purchase the right replacement window handle for your double glazed window.

Espag Handle

Espag handles are most commonly found on Upvc (but they are also used in timber and aluminium). The handles feature a square spindle which extends from the back of the handle and locks into the multi-point locking mechanism on the window. The handle is used to control the locking mechanism around the window.

Espag window handles are available in a variety of styles and functions. Some come with a push button for the locking position to be locked and key-locking. (And fire-escape nonlocking when required.) A majority of them meet the Secure by design specification for an extra level of security. They also come with a variety of different lengths of spindles, that can be adjusted using spindle sleeves to reduce the size of the protruding spindle.

Yale has tested the espagnolette handles we offer to ensure they meet the requirements you would expect. They are suitable for upvc windows or timber windows, as well as frames made of aluminium. We offer a variety of colors, and can match the handle to your existing hinges.

Another crucial aspect of espagnolette handles is their step height. This is the distance between the top of the handle and the point at which it rests on the frame. It is crucial to have this in order to ensure a tight, secure fit. Fortunately, the majority of our handles comply with industry standards of 43mm between screw hole centres.

You can choose between straight or cranked handles. Cranked handles are ideal for situations where the espagnolette handle will be placed close to the frame's edge as they will give you more clearance for opening the window.

Our range of replacement handles made from upvc features a wide variety of styles, finishes and colours to suit your home's decor, including polished chrome, satin nickel and antique brass. Some of our products feature soft-close systems to minimize the sound that windows create when they shut.

Cockspur Handle

The Cockspur Window Handle was designed for those who manufacture windows and want to offer their customers an elegant and premium design. These handles are suited to either uPVC or aluminium windows and work by having an incline on the handle that is secured over the edge of the frame to secure the window. This window handle can also be locked so that it only opens when pushed, providing additional security. The handle comes in five different finishes, with left and right handed. This allows the fabricators to cater for more windows.

The cockspur window handle comes with three packing pieces of different thicknesses. This allows them to be adjusted to a variety of sizes for backsets. Each packer can be removed from the handle nose or added to the step size to achieve a different distance between 9mm and 21mm. The handle is also available in left and right handed versions and both a straight or curved nose option.

It is important to measure your current handle height before purchasing a new handle to make sure it fits correctly. A wrong handle can cause a myriad of problems, including the inability for the window to be closed. This could be a hassle for homeowners and can lead to unnecessary stress.

A cockspur is a handle found on older uPVC, timber and aluminium windows. The handles do not come with any integrated window locks, unlike the Espag handles which are used on modern windows and include shootbolts or Espagnolette bar lock.

The handle espagnolette (often called 'espag" or 'espag") is the most commonly used handle found on new uPVC Casement Windows. The Yale Encloser locking mechanism is activated when you turn the espagnolette handles. This is a lot safer than a traditional cockspur handle or the standard British handle. This is due to the fact that the espagnolette handle turns multiple locks to secure the window frame.

Handle with Tilt and Turn

These windows are a popular choice for homeowners who want to improve the ventilation in their homes, while giving an added layer of security. As the name suggests, they come with an option to tilt and turn which allows the window to tilt open at 90 degrees, providing a small opening or to drop into a hopper design to allow for complete ventilation. This dual function also gives them a unique appearance that can create an impressive look to your double-glazed window.

Tilt-and-turn windows are more complex than other double-glazed window styles that can increase the cost of installation. They require more parts and require more labor. These windows are worth the investment as they can add value and provide many advantages to your home.

A major benefit is that they permit you to clean your windows from inside without using ladders that are outside. This is ideal for those who live high up in flats or in buildings, as it doesn't require you to risk falling down from an elevated position. Tilt and turn windows also provide additional security since windows are locked when in a tilted position which means that intruders who want to get inside cannot open them from inside.

These handles are typically found on European style windows in Germany and other European countries However, they can be used in UK homes. The uPVC replacement handle is normally a spindle based one and has a 7mm square spindle which is typically found in lengths of 32mm, 38mm and 44mm. The base of this handle is also wider than other handles, which is why it's referred to as a "tilt-safe" window handle. It is only opened after the window has been shut or tilted.

To replace a uPVC window handle that turns and turns, first remove the old handle using the screwdriver. The screws are typically hidden behind a backplate that is sprung loaded.
